The art of photography has
continually secured inspiration from its predecessor namely painting. For that reason, it remained as an earnest
desire in me to attempt a ‘re-creation’ of an image using the distinctive capabilities of photography. Undoubtedly
what came to my mind was Raja Ravi Varma’s famous portrait ‘Radha in the Moonlight’
which is possibly one of the most beautiful of Raja Ravi Varma's portraits. My persistent
search for an appropriate background ended in identifying a beautiful spot near
Chottanikkara.
This portrait is a
classic example of how the intrinsic beauty and emotions of the ‘uttama nayika’
can be explicitly captured in a luminous and spectacular setting. It helps our understanding
as to how the art of ‘composing’ may be carefully worked to explicitly depict
the rhythm and pattern of a ‘subject’. If we closely observe the negative space on
either side of the nayika, we can identify the dissimilarity between the left
and the right side. The left-hand side of the nayika is unoccupied and on the
right hand side, we see lush green trees. The vacant space on the left symbolize
the pensive disposition of the nayika’s mind which is elated by the envisioned presence
of her ‘nayakan’ (hero) and apparently transmits the sensation of nayakan’s
presence into the spectators. Meanwhile, the objects on the right-hand side
abstract the ‘nayika’ from the backdrop.
All the three layers in this
portrait are harmoniously blended. The objects in front of the nayika , namely,
the platter, the flowers, the sweetmeats and the wooden plank that supports
flaunt the ritual and the reverence and
brilliantly synchronize without any distraction for the main object. The middle
portion of the portrait with the moonlight gorgeously reflecting on the water
and the trees on the right side with the modest fragment of moonlight merged
gracefully endow the portrait with an alluring backdrop: a perfectly
articulated setting to manifest the romantic image of a beautiful woman eagerly
waiting for her lover. This central portion is what I felt as the most
captivating. The portrayal of sky and
moon in the rear side not only enhances its innate exuberance, but also
communicates a sense of infinity.
As a photographer, I will
forever be inspired by the magnificent colour and light effects in this
portrait. The colours used in this merge with utmost spontaneity. The beaming golden sari worn by the ‘nayika’,
abstracts her from the background to seize the attention of the spectators. While the background is lit with
moonlight, the catch-light
(light reflected in a subject's
eyes) and the fill-light are the natural radiance of the setting sun.
As a portrait photographer, I
have made a modest attempt to portray the matchless beauty and emotion in the
backdrop of nature.
I wish to place on record that
the sincere support and cooperation of my family and friends have been an immense
positive influence for venturing into such endeavors.
Shaji Maheswaran.
